Traffic Prahari App: Empowering Citizens for Safer Roads

In an effort to make Delhi’s roads safer and more disciplined, the Delhi Traffic Police launched an innovative initiative called the Traffic Sentinel Scheme back in December 2015. Over the years, the program has evolved, and on September 1, 2024, it was rebranded and relaunched as the Traffic Prahari app. This mobile application is available on both the Google Play Store (for Android) and the Apple Store (for iOS), making it accessible to most smartphone users. The purpose of the app is simple but powerful — to involve the general public in reporting traffic violations directly to the Delhi Traffic Police. Citizens can now become vigilant traffic sentinels or “Prahari” by simply capturing photos or videos of traffic rule violators and sending them through the app. This modern tool bridges the gap between the public and law enforcement, turning every responsible citizen into a partner for road safety.

Getting started with the Traffic Prahari app is quick and easy. Once you install the app, you’ll need to register using your mobile number, name, and email ID. An OTP is sent to your mobile number to verify the registration. After that, users can begin reporting traffic violations such as jumping red lights, illegal parking, driving without helmets, wrong-side driving, and more. When a user reports a violation, the app automatically captures essential details like the GPS location, date, and time from the mobile device. However, to make the complaint valid, users must also provide the vehicle’s registration number, the type of violation, and the location where it occurred. This information helps the Delhi Traffic Police in issuing a proper notice under Section 133 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 for appropriate legal action.

One of the most attractive aspects of the Traffic Prahari scheme is its reward system. Active users who regularly report valid violations earn points based on their contributions. These points are not just numbers — they can translate into actual rewards for the most dedicated Praharis. This incentive system is a great way to keep users engaged while promoting good road behavior. Moreover, the app promotes a sense of civic responsibility and gives citizens a meaningful role in creating a disciplined traffic culture. Instead of feeling helpless when witnessing a traffic offense, people now have the power to act responsibly and contribute to making roads safer for everyone. With such thoughtful integration of technology, community involvement, and law enforcement, the Traffic Prahari app is more than just a reporting tool — it’s a step forward in building a safer, more cooperative, and law-abiding urban environment.
